The UK’s Grosvenor family, currently headed by the 6th Duke of Westminster, dates back to the Middles Ages. It owes it’s first title to Richard Grosvenor - an Oxford graduate and member of Parliament from Cheshire who was knighted in 1617 and made a baronet in 1621 - and its immense fortune to Sir Thomas Grosvenor, 3rd baronet - who in 1677 married Mary Davies, heiress to 300 acres of land on the outskirts of London. As the city grew, the land became quickly prime real estate, laying the foundation for even more wealth and more titles. Today, 500 roads, squares and buildings bear the names of titles, people and places associated with the family and the Grosvenor group has billions of pounds of real estate under management.

Notable residents have included Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947), Prime Minister Arthur Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940), American philanthropist George Peabody (1795-1869), Polish composer Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), actress Dame Edith Evans (1888-1976), actress Vivien Leigh (1913-1967), Beatles' manager Brian Epstein (1934-1967), novelist Ian Lancaster Fleming (1908-1964), actor Sean Connery, actor Roger Moore, Frankenstein author Mary Shelley (1797-1851), Lieutenant Colonel Philip Edward Hardwick (1875-1919) who was the son of the architect Philip Charles Hardwick, and the poet Lord Tennyson (1809-1892). Currently, the area's most famous residents include UK's second richest man Roman Abramovich; the former Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher who lives in Chester Square; the actress and writer Joan Collins, singer-songwriter and actress Sarah Brightman, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, fashion mogul Elle Macpherson, Chief Financial Officer of Arcelor Mittal Aditya Mittal and Lady Helen Taylor, the daughter of the Duke of Kent, celebrity & Royal Solicitor, Fiona Shackleton. It is also the birth place of Lord Randolph Churchill (father of Sir Winston Churchill) and actor Christopher Lee.

After World War II some of the largest houses ceased to be used as residences, but the new uses were restricted to certain categories, including embassies, charity headquarters and professional institutes. In the early 21st century some of these houses are being reconverted to residential use, as offices in old houses are no longer as desirable as they were in the post-war decades, while the number of super-rich in London is at a level not seen since at least 1939. The Grosvenor family inherited 400 acres of land between Buckingham Palace and Sloane Street, from the Thames as far north as Knightsbridge. This ultimately became Belgravia and Pimlico. In medieval times the Belgravia area was known as the Five Fields. In the 18th century it was just a wasteland used for grazing sheep. It was a dangerous place for respectable people to go. One of the bridges over the West Bourne river was called Bloody Bridge because of the number of violent robberies there. It was an area for highwaymen and footpads. It appealed to the aristocracy only as a popular area for duels, sufficiently far from civilization.

The catalyst for turning this area from a wasteland into a thriving residential district was the decision by George IV to build a new palace on the site of Buckingham House in 1819 and to move the court there.

In the 1820s Lord Grosvenor decided to develop the area as an estate to rival his existing estate in Mayfair. He came to an agreement with Thomas Cubitt. Over the next 30 years Belgravia was constructed and was immediately fashionable. Cubitt provided the estate with good quality services such as sewers and gas lighting, and well-constructed streets and pavements. Originally the area had gates and bars across the entrance of the estate to keep out undesirables and heavy traffic.

The estate was named Belgravia after Belgrave, a village on the Grosvenors’ family estate in Leicestershire.
